Indulgent emotions are emotions that we feel or are our go-to. Emotions can be habitual because they are familiar to us and we know what to do with them and how to handle ourselves when we are feeling a certain way.
Examples of indulgent emotions include worry, confusion, overwhelm, busy, tired and anxiousness. Sometimes these emotions are like super highways through our brain. They are 8 lanes wide and are well trodden in our minds. We know them well. We are comfortable with them and we know what to do with them.
When we choose to feel certain emotions over and over, it can benefit us in a way that keeps us stuck and it prevents us from having to work through something. We can use or emotions as an excuse, blaming the emotion for not taking different action or for taking a certain action.
Question: How often do you feel overwhelmed, confused, anxious or worried?
Pick one that you feel most often and think of when you feel it and why. What thought is associated with the emotion that you are feeling?
Do you believe you could go a day, a week, or a month without experiencing this feeling? Why or why no?t
Why would you want to keep this emotion? In what ways is it helpful for you? Does it serve you in any way?
When we think of not having a familiar emotion, that alone can make us anxious and panicky. Learning to identify these familiar emotional patterns can help us gain power over them. When we do this work, we learn we can choose differently.
