Learning how to see and interview our self from the future is a valuable tool that can help us make decisions in our day to day.
Often we get so caught up in our daily routines that we forget we can make choices and re-decide all kinds of things - how we show up in relationships, what we eat, whether or not we want to begin a career change, etc. Learning to consult with your future self will help you gain perspective and make decisions for your today and your present moment.
Pretend you are doing a red carpet interview. You’ve just completed a goal of yours and you’re holding an award. What was that goal? What do you want to be wearing? What jewelry goes with your outfit/gown? What emotions do you want to be feeling? Who are your people who you want to thank and make mention of? Step into this moment and rehearse what it would be like to have completed this big goal of yours.
Breaking this down further, if this is a 5 year goal, what has to happen at 2 years to achieve this goal? What things need to happen to achieve this goal on a daily basis? An example would be if in 5 years you want to retire, you would need to probably come up with a budget. Having a budget may make you feel restricted and may mean you have to cut out some of your favorite things in order make your goal of retirement in 5 years. Learning to feel restricted and still be OK would be a goal that goes in tandem with your goal of retiring in 5 years.
Consulting with your future self and processing what it would feel like and be like to be on the other side of your goal can help us make decisions and set small goals. Learning to reference your future self and make decisions from that place can bring perspective into your every day decisions.
